Description

Advance Decisions: Supporting Your Choices at the End-of-Life

Wednesday 9th September 2015

Seminar 1-2pm, Workshop 2-3pm

Professor Sue Wilkinson is Professor of Feminist and Health Studies in the Department of Social Sciences at Loughborough University. As co-founder of a new charity: ADA (Advance Decisions Assistance) Professor Sue Wilkinson will be offering a Lunchtime Seminar followed by a workshop hosted by the Ageing Research Centre.

Most people do not want to be kept alive without awareness – but very few have made their wishes known. This seminar will introduce you to one way of doing this: making a legally-binding Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment. It will examine the legal and philosophical basis of Advance Decisions, the practical steps involved in making them, and some of the issues they raise.

The additional workshop will offer you the opportunity to write your own Advance Decision – or at least to begin thinking about the process. It will also consider some of the barriers to writing an Advance Decision, and what is needed in order for an Advance Decision to ‘work’ effectively.
